Every day people send and receive emails. I was wondering if one day people will send and receive podcasts in the same way? As technology expands and people become more familiar with the software, will they use it as a replacement for emails? It is more personal and has the opportunity to convey a message quickly. The possibility is there. I guess we will have to wait and see.

While the semester is winding down, I was thinking about how much I have learned and what it has taught me. Do you think in the near future podcasts will be obsolete and a new technology will replace it? Will podcasts be something that sticks around? I believe podcasts will bring a new era in the future of business and technology. As more and more people begin to become familiar and enjoy podcasts, they will find new uses and helpful tips for podcasting. I think it has the possibility to alter the way businesses operate and how people communicate. What do you think?

During class on Monday, after learning about the horrible events that took place on Virginia Tech campus, our class discussed how the internet has changed situations like these. I would like to take a look at the past and where the future is taking us…

With the tragic event that took place on September 11, 2001, our country was left in awe and crippled. It was an event no one was prepared for or saw coming. The only way for word of the event to travel was for people to hear about it on the radio, on the television or through word of mouth. Since this took place during the work day, many people did not hear about it until hours later. Chaos and confusion surrounded most everyone. It was hard to understand what was taking place because citizens only had the television or radio to turn to for up to date information.

Then came the internet. People are no longer confined to a set news report to get information they want when they want it. When I heard about the shooting that took place at Virginia Tech I immediately ran to the internet to learn more.

What a change six years has had on our society. With podcasts and minute by minute updates on hundreds of different Web sites, the information flow is not, and probably will never be dry.

Did you know, if you miss the news you can catch it in a podcast? Did you know, if you want to know more about a specific subject in the news you can watch your favorite reporter podcast about it? CNN.com is the number one news podcast on iTunes. There are daily podcasts done by news reporters to specials stories posted every day. The news Web site has a most popular list as well as featured podcasts to get you started. This is very interesting change to the news. I, personally, do not like to watch the news. I am never home at that time and if I am I do not want to watch an hour of news for only about fifteen minutes that I care about. This is a wonderful solution to my problem. I can pick and chose what I want to watch and it also has great suggestions to things I might enjoy. YouTube & the President?

What do YouTube and the 2008 Presidential election have in common? More than you think! Youtube.com has just started its “You Chose ’08 Spotlight.” Each week one candidate will have the spotlight on the News & Politics page of YouTube, where they’ll be available to engage users in a video dialogue. The candidates will post a podcast asking the YouTube viewers a question and everyone will have one week to post their comments and answers. The candidates will monitor the posted videos and, before the week is through, will post another video reflecting on what they’ve seen. According to YouTube.com, “This is your chance to engage the leaders who are competing for the most powerful position in the country. Let them know what you think and keep an eye on their replies. This is a great chance to get to know the candidates better by speaking across the level platform that is politics on YouTube.”

In my opinion this is groundbreaking! I can not imagine what this is going to do for the youth of
America. With the millions of viewers per week this is going to, in my opinion, change the Presidential election. One of the biggest complaints from the youth when it comes to voting is, “I don’t care” or “It doesn’t effect me.” While I have fallen in this category, YouTube and the candidates are sending an powerful message, saying we care about you and making the issues that effect teenagers and young adults an open forum that directly communicates with the people that matter.

Who is number one?

I wonder… Do the same rankings that apply to songs and movies apply to podcasts? Yahoo, Digg and our class web site, wordpress think so. While the most popular podcasts list is not soaring on the billboard “Top 100″ chart, do people pay attention to this list? Will the top podcast list be something people pay attention to in the future? What exactly makes a podcast a popular one?

Unfortunately, I do not have answers to these questions… only opinions. In my opinion, the most popular podcast list is something people will care about in the future and it will change everything, from the way people podcast to the subjects they podcast about. I also think what makes a podcast popular will change in the years to come. As more people pay attention to podcasts and as they grow rapidly in numbers, the trends will change, as they have with movies and music.

While thinking about podcasts this week, I was wondering what makes them so great? I came up with a couple of ideas but my favorite is how different they are. Podcast or blog

With podcasting becoming such a popular outlet for people to express themselves, do you think it will take over?

Hundreds of millions of people blog on a semi-regular basis. It is HUGE on the internet. People write and read blogs more and more as the months pass. However, with podcasting becoming such a big thing, I wonder if soon podcasting will replace blogging? It is a little bit more personal and different but it also takes more effort. Could blogging be replaced in the future?

Recently, I have podcasted twice because of our online communities class assignments and have found out more about podcasting through that than any other avenue. I have learned how to confidently use the software and how to edit a podcast. It lead me to think… with so many podcasts out there, does everyone podcast and I was the only one left out or are the ones podcasting doing it all for us?

Are the people that have created podcasts in the past the ones continuing to podcast again and again making the number of podcasts grow rapidly (of course, people are learning every day and beginning to podcast but I mean on a general level) or are people genuinly falling in love with podcasting and new people are doing it now? Do people see it as “the new thing to do” and just love it or do they say/think they say or think “I don’t have the software,” “I don’t have time,” “It’s too complicated?”
